چکیده

A general theory is used to describe the correlation properties of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in a birefringent, linear, dispersive medium such as optical fibers. The theory includes the effects of frequency dependence of birefringence on all orders, and it is capable of providing statistical information about secondand higher-order correlations among the polarization and PMD vectors. We apply the general theory to study pulse broadening induced by different-order PMD and PMD-induced pulse distortion through the thirdand fourth-order temporal moments (related to skewness and flatness, respectively). Our analytic results are in good agreement with numerical simulations. © 2003 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 060.2330, 060.4510, 060.5530, 260.5430, 260.2030.

Pulse broadening induced by dispersion fluctuations in optical fibers

A general theory is presented to describe the effects of dispersion fluctuations on optical pulses propagating inside single-mode fibers modeled as a linear dispersive medium. It is shown that the pulse broadening induced by dispersion fluctuations can be quite large in dispersion-managed lightwave systems, especially at high bit rates, and can exceed that induced by third-order dispersion and ...

Fiber Spinning for Reducing Polarization Mode Dispersion in Single- Mode Fibers: Theory and Applications

This paper surveys recent progress in fiber spinning technology for reducing polarization mode dispersion with the focus on theoretical understanding of fiber spinning mechanism and features of spun fibers, as well as their applications in fiber spin profiles designs. First, a brief introduction to the requirements of fiber PMD for high-speed optical fiber communications systems is given. Furth...

Polarization Mode Dispersion in Optical Fibers

In the previous chapter, we discussed devices based on deliberately introduced birefringence in an optical fiber, thus utilizing the polarization effects to our advantage. In Chapter 10, we discuss the detrimental aspect of birefringence in optical fibers—namely, polarization mode dispersion (PMD). The existence of birefringence in a fiber implies that the fiber supports two orthogonally polari...

Differential Group Delay Analysis of Uniform Bragg Gratings Written in Hi-Bi Optical Fibers

Fibre Bragg Gratings (FBG) have become key components in optical communications systems, and, in the same time, lightwave transmissions are more intolerant to the polarization mode dispersion. Consequently, the polarization properties of FBG are of paramount importance. In this frame, we analyze the wavelength dependency of Differential Group Delay in the particular case of a uniform Bragg Grat...

A Poincare Sphere Method for Measuring Polarization-Mode Dispersion Using Four-Wave Mixing (FWM) in Single-Model Optical Fiber

A nonlinear Poincare sphere method for measuring polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) using the four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in single-mode optical fibers is presented. This method is based on the FWM-power transfer function on the polarization states of the input signals. Average PMD can be obtained by using this method with measurements in just a narrow optical bandwidth.
